This census, the first of its kind, compelled every person to return to their ancestral hometown. Joseph, a carpenter from Nazareth, was of the house and lineage of David. Though he was betrothed to Mary, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Being a righteous man, Joseph had planned to divorce her quietly, but an angel appeared to him in a dream, saying: > "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." And so Joseph took Mary as his wife, and they journeyed from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea, the town of David. The journey was long and arduous, especially for Mary who was heavy with child. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, they found the town overflowing with people who had come for the census. There was no room for them in the inn. In their hour of need, they were offered humble shelter in a stable. It was there, among the animals, that Mary gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger. In this moment of profound simplicity, the Savior of the world entered human history. That night, in the fields nearby, shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were terrified, but the angel said: > "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
